Revell Pirate Ghost Ship Review

Well this is an interesting kit. I bought it as a present for my youngest son. With the release of the latest Pirates of the Carribean film I thought this kit would go down well at home.

Im used to build aircraft kits and I havent built a ship kit since I built a version of HMS Victory in the early 1970s!

Im not sure how old this kit is in the Revell catalouge but if it has been around for sometime it must still be a good seller for them to produce it.

The aircraft kits I have built have always been finely detailed and well moulded. The pirate ship is detailed but the quality of the moulding are not up to the standard of the aircraft kits. There is a reason for that and it wasnt until I reached the end of the build I discovered why!

The kit comes moulded in dark brown plastic. Stickers and Glow in the dark paint are also included. A good set of instruction help you to build the model with little fuss.

The kit fits together well but some care needs to be taken with the glueing and alignment of the hull and stern section. I would recommend the use of clips and tape to secure these parts together whilst they dry (left overnight).

The remainder of the build is straightforward and the kit assembles easily and quickly.

The only difficult part for me was the rigging. You have to supply your own cotton thread for the rigging and with my big fingers it was a bit fiddly. This was the only part of the model build that is not detailed as well as it could have been in the instructions.

This took some time to get right but its worth doing properly to get the right effect.

Now back to the subject of the moulding quality. I mentioned earlier that the moulding quality wasnt as good as I had come to expect with the aircraft kits. Well when it comes to finishing the model it needs a good coat of the Glow in the Dark paint. Now this paint requires mixing for a few minutes to make sure all the consistancy and all of the glow in the darkness is mixed up!

The paint is quite thick and covers a lot of the fine detail. Hence why the kit is not finely detailed in the first place. The paint needs to cover well and when the ship is finished it does give it a ghostly look. Make sure you dont paint the ships stand.

To really make this ship glow in the dark you need to shine a light (torch or flashlight) onto the model for about 30 seconds and then turn the lights off. If you didnt paint the ships stand then when the lights go off and the Glow in the Dark paint is fully charged the ship looks as though it is floating in thin air.
